Texas Senate Bill 773 (2023) expanded the role of pharmacists in Texas, allowing them to dispense certain medications — including ivermectin — under a physician standing order without requiring a separate patient visit to a physician.
What Changed
Before SB 773, ivermectin required a prescription from a physician for each patient. SB 773 allows a physician to issue a standing order with a clinical protocol that a licensed Texas pharmacist follows when evaluating and dispensing for individual patients.
Patient Safety Requirements
- Documented health questionnaire
- Pharmacist clinical review
- Clear contraindication screening
- Pharmacist counseling on use
What This Means for You
You can get pharmacist-evaluated treatment without a separate doctor visit — but the pharmacist is still required to assess your case and may decline if treatment isn’t appropriate.
